The following suggestions offer ways to prepare for safer driving on icy roads this Winter:
1) Deicing the car before driving! Use deicer on the windows or tepid water but have the engine running and the heater on full blast or the water could freeze.
2) If like me you leave your car to warm up in the morning before driving, make sure its secure ( it could get stolen and the insurance company will be delighted not honour your claim)
3) Make sure Tyres are inflated to correct pressure and in a good serviceable condition.
4) Put and old sleeping bag in the boot in a plastic bag with a cheap torch, just in case you get stranded or lucky!!!
5) Never leave home in winter unless you have a coat with you in the car (pajamas are for indoors between the hours of 21:00-09:00
6) keep your phone charged
7) When the weather turns really nasty don’t make a journey unless you have to and remember 12 hours after the snow falls the council usually have the main roads clear but the housing estates are impassable for days (so don’t go into an estate unless you can get out).
8) Give yourself enough time for your journey
9) Always maintain the correct stopping distance
10) If you have to drive in snow or ice, drive in as high a gear as possible, as slow as possible, look two cars ahead and use the gears to slow down.
11) Rear wheel drive cars and automatics are the hardest to drive in these conditions so be aware and leave the car at home or at work if possible.
12) Buy Rock salt early to put the finishing touches to drive way and the footpaths adjacent to your house (lidl dish washer salt is cheap).
12) Look in on the old and infirm neighbours, clear their paths and door steps etc.
13) Put our number and a car recovery number in your phone.
14) AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST get you car checked for …the winter (cars without anti- freeze are a big problem)
